Belagavi: The city households may find themselves not waiting for cumbersome LPG cylinders.
A project to provide piped LPG to households has been taken up, through a public-private-partnership (PPP) model, at an estimated cost of Rs 272.80 crore. The project will be completed phase-wise over the course of the next five years.
As per the contract, MEIL will have to develop an underground gas distribution network in city.
Once the project is completed, households will get natural gas through the pipeline in their kitchens, like tap water. As per a recent survey, there are 49,193 households in the city that use LPG, and the project's objective is to convert them to users of Piped Natural Gas (PNG).
According to sources of MEIL, physical work will begin once the documentation process is complete. Most of the procedural work is completed and now the company is engaged in getting permissions from Belagavi City Corporation.
i the company will lay 1,800 inch kms gas pipeline in city (An inch km refers to a pipe with a diameter of an inch and a length of a kilometre). It will be a completely separate underground network.
Once the project is complete, piped gas will be supplied to households through the year, without disruptions. "PNG changes the way we source and use our energy. It provides immense convenience and safety as compared to other fuels in use today. It's efficient and cost effective.
