Cives Steel, which has made steel structures in Thomasville in Georgia for 39 years, last week shut down and 100 employees lost their jobs. Company President Greg Orff told the Thomasville Times-Enterprise that said the COVID-19 pandemic created an unanticipated and unsustainable situation in what was already a difficult geographic market and that only 18 workers remain onboard to close up shop. He said "It was with great regret that we announced the suspension of all operations at the Cives Steel Southern Division in Thomasville. Despite exceptional efforts by our personnel, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our operation in Thomasville created an unanticipated and unsustainable situation in what was already a difficult geographic market. These conditions forced us to make the very difficult decision of closing our facility. We will be working with our impacted personnel to ease the burden of this event as we immediately proceed with an orderly shutdown of operations."

The company is one of the largest structural steel and plate fabricators in North America. It has had a role in many projects across the United States, including GM's new electric hummer facility and Salesforce Tower in Chicago. Cives Steel still has seven locations spread throughout the United States.
