Common corrosion and mitigation methods for petrochemical pipelines

First, the causes of corrosion of petrochemical pipelines.
Since the pipelines transport materials containing sulfur and acidic substances, the corrosion of petrochemical pipelines is inevitable. The specific causes of corrosion of petrochemical pipelines are mainly the following: steel oxygen absorption corrosion caused by the principle of galvanic cells, hydrogen evolution corrosion caused by acidic sulfides accumulated on the surface of pipelines due to acid rain, acidic corrosion of carbon dioxide caused by atmospheric precipitation, bacterial corrosion caused by bacteria that can metabolize sulfates on the surface of pipelines, and corrosion caused by water accumulation in pipelines.
Second, methods to prevent or slow down corrosion of petrochemical pipelines.
The following methods can slow down or prevent pipeline corrosion.
1. Adapt to local conditions: reasonably select pipeline building materials, and select different types of materials according to different transport media and environmental conditions.
2. Add DC power supply to steel pipes: let the metal of the pipeline that was originally the anode become the cathode for protection.
3. Preliminary treatment of the medium: remove the highly corrosive components in the medium or adjust its pH value.
4. Add anti-corrosion coating to the surface of steel pipes: it can isolate the steel pipes from contact with oxygen in the air to achieve protection.
5. Add corrosion inhibitors: Nowadays, the key development direction of anti-corrosion technology in pipelines and other fields is corrosion inhibitors, which are special additives added to metal equipment to slow down corrosion. They have small dosages, low investment, and obvious effects.
