Piling pipe for Foundation Construction Pipe piles are used to create sturdy foundations for structures such as buildings, bridges, and roads. Pipe piles can be driven or drilled deep into the ground and will transfer the load of a building to the stronger soil or rock below. There are a variety of types of pipe piling available as well as a number of techniques and methods that can be used when installing pipe piles. Depending on the specific situation as well as the loads that the pipe will need to support, each of these different techniques may be used.
The two main installation methods that are used for installing pipe piles include driving piles or drilling piles deep into the ground. Each of these main methods can be completed using a number of different techniques depending on the type of pipe piling being used as well as the circumstances in which the pipe piles are being installed.
Driven piling pipe can be driven into the ground using specialized equipment. Driving piling pipe into the ground offers an advantage over drilling shafts because the soil that is displaced when driving the piles into the ground compresses the surrounding soil, and therefore, causes greater friction against the sides of the piles. This friction can increase the load-bearing capacity of pipe piles. Driven piles can include open ended piles which allow soil or sand to enter into the tube or pipe piles with one end of the pipe closed in order to keep sand or dirt from entering the center of the piling. Steel pipe piles that are driven with one end closed may be filled with concrete to increase stability and hold.Drilled piling pipes are also called caissons, drilled shafts, drilled piers, cast-in-drilled-hole (CIDH) piles, or cast-in-situ piles. When this piling installation method is used, piles are put into the ground using rotary boring equipment. Rotary boring or drilling is commonly used for installing large diameter piles and for pile construction through particularly dense or hard strata. This method for installing pipe piles can be used in dry ground conditions as well as when wet boring through water logged strata.
